Product Background
Batik is a technique of wax-resist dyeing which has been practised for centuries in several Asian countries.
In Java, Indonesia, batik is part of an ancient tradition, and some of the finest batik designs are still made there. Indonesian batik is made either by drawing dots and lines of the resist with a spouted tool called a canting or by printing the resist with a copper stamp called a cap. Whilst in India, artisans use a carved wooden block to produce the desired block print design.
The waxed areas maintains the original colour of the fabric and when the wax is removed, the contrast in shades between the dyed and wax-resist area produces the desired pattern.
